Changing the oil in your vehicle is one of the easiest ways to keep it running smoothly. Here are five indicators that it’s time for car oil and lube maintenance:
Color and Consistency
Fresh oil is honey brown in color and should have a smooth consistency similar to syrup. As oil repeatedly worked through an engine, it begins to turn black. In addition, it may pick up dirt and grime that will cause it to feel coarse or gritty. If you check the dip stick and your oil is thick and dark, the oil should be changed immediately from preventing any build-up in the engine.
Engine Volume
One of the primary functions of oil is to lubricate the engine. As oil collects dirt and sediment, its ability to properly lube parts lessens. If your engine seems louder or is making irregular noises, it may be time to change the oil.
Suggested Maintenance Schedule
Depending on the quality and composition of the oil, most manufacturers recommend changing fluids every 3-6 months. While it may seem convenient to ignore routine maintenance schedules, it will certainly affect your vehicle and may result in costly repairs in the future. Put simply, if you can’t remember the last time you had the oil changed, you’re probably overdue.
Warning Lights
Most vehicles will display a console light when it is time to change the oil. Similarly, some vehicles will display a check engine light when the oil is no longer performing sufficiently. If this is the case, there is no need to run diagnostic tests of worry about costly garage fees. Just get the oil changed!
Low Oil
When an engine has low oil, it cannot operate at peak efficiency. It may also be a sign that there is either a leak in the system or there is something causing the oil to burn off at a rapid rate. Adding oil is a temporary solution, but will not rejuvenate the old oil. If the dip stick shows low or dirty oil, the only solution is to change it before the problem gets any worse.
