Your car’s battery is an important part of the vehicle. Without a properly maintained battery, there’s a chance that you’ll not be able to start your car and get where you’re going. While car maintenance can seem daunting to some people, there are some things that are quite simple. One of these things is battery maintenance. Here are a few things you should know about car battery maintenance.
Batteries Don’t Last Forever
How old is your car’s battery? If you don’t know, it’s time to open up the hood and look. Typically, car batteries only last between two and five years. If your car’s battery has been exposed to extreme temperatures or repeated charging and discharging, it may be even less than that. Five years may seem like a long time, but it can go quicker than you think. If you notice your car having difficulty starting or any other odd electrical behavior, it’s not a bad idea to have your battery checked out.
Corrosion Can Cause Issues
Corrosion on a battery occurs when the battery discharges over time. An alkaline substance leaks out of the battery and can cover the exterior of the battery and cause problems. To prevent this, take a look at your battery every few months. If you see any signs of corrosion, clean the battery with some battery cleaner or some baking soda and a wire brush.
Battery Maintenance is Easy
You might think that a battery is hard to keep in good condition, but in reality, it’s not. Aside from cleaning off corrosion, there isn’t much to do. If you make sure it is clean and clear of debris and fully charged, you shouldn’t have many issues. Also, if you want, you can check the water levels in your car’s battery every few months. This is only necessary if you have a wet-cell battery. If you have an Absorbed Glass Matt battery, never attempt to open it.
