Our roadside assistance units respond to hundreds of flat tyre service request a day. However learning how to fix a flat tyre yourself can be extremely handy. Checkout out our step by step guide below:
1. Once you are certain your tyre is flat turn on your hazard lights and park somewhere on a hard surface ensuring you are visible to other vehicles.
2. Once you are parked & it is safe – remove the roadside kit from your trunk.
3. Next you will need to remove the spare tyre from your trunk by unscrewing it.
4. If your flat tyre has a wheel cap, you must remove it to reveal the tyres lugs & bolts.
5. After you have removed the wheel cap, use your lug wrench to LOOSEN not remove the lugs bolts.
6. Once the lugs/bolts are loose, place the jack into the frame under your car (there will be a groove where it fits into.) Ensure you follow your user manual as jacks may vary from vehicle to vehicle.
7. Make sure that the jack is not twisting and its base is level to the ground. Remember not to place your jack on soft ground such as soil or grass! After this you can begin raising your vehicle.
8. Continuing from step 6, you will completely remove the lugs/bolts – make sure you keep them safely as you will need these to attach the new tyre!
9. After the lugs/bolts are remove you should completely be able to remove your flat tyre.
10. Here we suggest placing the flat tyre under the car as protection in case the jack were to fail or dislodge – your car will not fall on the unprotected wheel hub.
11. You’re almost there! Place the new tyre onto the wheel hub.
12. Now tighten the lugs & bolts with your hand only. Do not use the lug wrench at this point.
13. Remove the flat tyre from under your car and lower your vehicle so that your spare is only just touching the ground.
14. Now use your lug wrench to tighten all the lugs/bolts in a cross star pattern ensuring the wheel tightens evenly.
15. You can now lower your vehicle fully to the ground.
16. With the vehicle lowered completely use your lug wrench one final time to ensure the lugs/bolts are fully tightened.
17. Place your flat tyre and road side kit in your trunk and you are done!
