We all hate it when the air conditioning system in our car breaks down. It means lots of hot days on the road until we get it fixed. Here are some air conditioning maintenance tips to make sure that your car’s air conditioning system keeps working.
Turn on Your Air Conditioning Every Week
Sometimes, especially during the cooler months, you feel no need for an air conditioner in your car. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t turn it on. Make sure to turn on your air conditioning system at least once a week for ten minutes. This will make sure that the hoses, valves, and pumps stay lubricated and that the compressor has enough gas pressure.
Run Defrost Mode
Running defrost mode for a few minutes each week will clean out excessive moisture in your air conditioning system. This will prevent unpleasant odours from permeating your car.
Change the Air Filters
Changing the cabin air filters will increase the compressor’s life and reduce health risks associated with polluted air conditioning air. Change them every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or every 5,000 miles if you live in a heavily polluted area.
Get It Checked
Whenever you bring your car for a standard maintenance service, make sure to ask the mechanic to check your air conditioning service as well and to regas the system if necessary. Ask that the refrigerant level be checked. This is not always included in a standard maintenance check.
